How Tri-State Nursing Scaled Nationally with Array HQ as Its Top Candidate Source

Array HQ has put 917 nursing candidates in front of Tri-State Nursing, and about a quarter of them applied. Stephen Liebetrau is the agency's only recruiter. The spring before, his entire pipeline was thirty college career fairs.

Tri-State Nursing began in 1993 as a staffing agency connecting nurses with healthcare facilities across the midwest tri-state area of Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska. It has since expanded from Alaska to Texas to become a leader in medical staffing. Originally focused on home health care, the company now places RNs, LPNs, and CNAs on short and long term contracts across hospitals, nursing homes, medical clinics, and in-home care. From its Sioux City headquarters it also runs flu clinics, safety inspections, and a Mommy and Me program for its community.

Stephen Liebetrau, MS, RRT, started his career as a respiratory therapist and later worked as a physician recruiter for a private practice and a nonprofit hospital before joining Tri-State Nursing. "I joined Tri-State at the end of January because they needed a recruiter," Steve said. "When I came on board, we were in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota." His role splits between recruiting nurses and marketing to the facilities that place them.

Steve is the only recruiter at Tri-State Nursing, so he hit the ground running. He started with traditional recruiting and networking at career fairs, and January turned out to be the right month for it. "It was a good time to do it because most of the fairs were in February, March, and April. I contacted all Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska colleges and universities. I scheduled as many as I could. I think I ended up going to about 30." The fairs built a presence in areas Tri-State hadn't reached before, like Western Nebraska.

Thirty career fairs, then an inbox

As college recruiting season wound down, Steve needed a new source of nurses. He weighed LinkedIn and other platforms before a sales rep from Array HQ reached out. After looking at cost, scope of services, and the results of a trial, Tri-State Nursing signed on.

"As a physician recruiter, I'd worked with other companies and did not have the results we're having with Array HQ," Steve said.

His day-to-day changed completely. Instead of travelling to fairs, he logs into his inbox each morning to a list of new applicants. "Every morning when I come in, I look at what comes in through Array HQ."

The volume followed. "This has been extremely successful to date," Steve said. "We've had about 917 names that have been presented to us from Array HQ, and I would say 25% have applied with us to work." Of more than 900 candidates, roughly a quarter went on to complete a long-form application — a conversion rate well above the industry average.

From three states toward fifty

Steve isn't the only one pleased with the results. Tri-State's President and CEO, Bridget Hoefling, backed growing the Array HQ account without hesitation when the agency looked to expand nationally. "I would never think about using anybody else," she said. "We get what we need from Array HQ."

With Array HQ in place, Steve led the expansion. "Bridget's goal is to be able to place nurses in every state." Tri-State has since moved into North Dakota, Missouri, and Texas, and is spreading into Nevada, Alaska, Illinois, Kansas, and Indiana ahead of active recruiting there.

Array HQ has remained the largest source of candidates throughout the push. "There are times where I get 15 to 20 applicants in a two day period, and I expect more as we're expanding." Steve couldn't picture doing it another way. "It's exciting. Every day is different. You try to hit all the areas in one day, but it never happens."
